《蛇沼鬼城》免费阅读 "Mr. Drouet is hurt and in the hospital. He wants to see you.The cab's downstairs."
"Is that a paper?" said Carrie.《蛇沼鬼城》免费阅读 Hurstwood felt some of this in her nature, though he did notactually perceive it. He dwelt with her in peace and somesatisfaction. He did not fear her in the least--there was nocause for it. She still took a faint pride in him, which wasaugmented by her desire to have her social integrity maintained. She was secretly somewhat pleased by the fact that much of herhusband's property was in her name, a precaution which Hurstwoodhad taken when his home interests were somewhat more alluringthan at present. His wife had not the slightest reason to feelthat anything would ever go amiss with their household, and yetthe shadows which run before gave her a thought of the good of itnow and then. She was in a position to become refractory withconsiderable advantage, and Hurstwood conducted himselfcircumspectly because he felt that he could not be sure ofanything once she became dissatisfied.
Presently Mr. Brown came up. He did not seem to recosnise her.
"Here's fifteen," exclaimed a young man, peering forward withstrained eyes. "It's all I can afford."
"Hello," he exclaimed, half to himself, "has Carrie gone?"
Seeing the opposition to his action, he looked sullenly along theline, then moved out, taking his place at the foot. When orderhad been restored, the animal feeling of opposition relaxed.
"Well," he said, as he took her arm--and there was an exuberanceof good-fellowship in the word which fairly warmed the cockles ofher heart.
As she did all these things, she was in a most despondent state.
"Now," continued Mr. Withers, swaying his derby hat softly andbeating one of his polished shoes upon the floor, "I want toarrange, if possible, to have you come and stop at theWellington. You need not trouble about terms. In fact, we needhardly discuss them. Anything will do for the summer--a merefigure--anything that you think you could afford to pay."
Thus was Carrie's name bandied about in the most frivolous andgay of places, and that also when the little toiler was bemoaningher narrow lot, which was almost inseparable from the earlystages of this, her unfolding fate.
"What can you do? Have you ever worked in a retail store before? Are you experienced?"
